CONOCENOS | FIESTAS Y TRADICIONES

The most unique festival of Monzón is known as “El Bautizo del Alcalde”. It is held annually December 4th. It includes the feast of Santa Barbara and goodies tossed from the Town Hall balcony into the crowd below gathered in the main square.

On December 4th, 1643, the Castilian troops recaptured the castle held by the French army (War of Secession) and this is why Santa Barbara is the patroness saint of the city.

The legend later narrates that people elected a nearby Moor as mayor. To resolve religious affiliation issues, the mayor agreed to convert to Christianity and the conflict ended. The mayor was baptized, the city burst into party and the occasion celebrated ever since.
